2023 World Bowls Championships: Day 7 recap
The second week of 2023 World Bowls Championships action got under way across the Gold Coast on Tuesday, with men’s singles & fours and women’s pairs and triples play commencing.
Men’s Singles
2022 Commonwealth Games singles finalists Aaron Wilson (Australia) and Gary Kelly (Ireland) made solid starts to their singles campaign, running the first day unbeaten.
Wilson conceded just 17 shots on day one, while Kelly was even more impressive, dropping just 12 shots across his three games.
Reigning World Champion of Champions singles champion Sam Tolchard (England) also impressed in his three wins as did Kenta Treacher in the same section, with all four sections shaping up as expected after three rounds.
Women’s Pairs
The women’s pairs competition is shaping up as a fascinating competition after the first three rounds of play.
After a strong Commonwealth Games last year, Norfolk Island duo Carmen Anderson and Shae Wilson continued their dominant partnership, with three wins to sit clear atop section one.
South Africa and Wales had a draw with each other, but claimed wins in their other games to sit in second and third respectively.
Philippines and New Zealand had massive wins to sit clear of section two.
Scotland are a little off the pace in section three, with a win and a loss, while Canada and India finished the day with a win and a draw each, behind Malaysia with two wins.
Section four shapes up as a thrilling group already. Commonwealth Games champions Kristina Krstic and Ellen Ryan fell short against Malta sisters Connie and Rebecca Rixon to finish the day with a 2-1 record, while England sit clear in that group with three wins.
Women’s Triples
Australia and Ireland have taken early control of section one of the women’s triples, unbeaten with strong shot differences to their name.
Canada and New Zealand also remain unbeaten from section two, as do Malaysia and India in section three.
South Africa remain the only unbeaten side from section four.
Men’s Fours
A handful of draws across several sections has left the men’s fours competition wide open after three rounds of play.
Wales and Namibia remain unbeaten in section two after playing out an enthralling third round draw. They sit ahead of Australia who enjoyed two comfortable wins on a day that also featured their bye.
Macao China claimed one of the scalps of the tournament, taking points from Commonwealth Games fours champions Ireland in a 13-13 draw.
The USA backed up strong triples form from week one to sit atop section three unbeaten after day one.
England also sit unbeaten atop section four, clear of Hong Kong China and Scotland who also shared honours.
New Zealand remain the only lossless side in section one, claiming victories from both their games on Tuesday.
Play will re-commence around the Gold Coast from 8.30am on Wednesday.
